KAHPERD Past President Jack Rutherford brings home the GOLD!  Way to go Jack!!!

Richmond Natives Compete in Senior Olympics (From the Richmond Register)

Local residents Carl Palmer and Jack Rutherford got a little taste of that Olympic spirit last week at the National Senior Games in San Francisco. Palmer and Rutherford competed in men’s doubles tennis while Rutherford also played singles, capturing the gold medal in the men’s 55 age division.

In singles play, after an opening round default win, Rutherford won third set victories in three straight matches on his way to the gold medal. In the final, he defeated John Farley of Pennsylvania 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 to claim his first gold at the games. He won a silver medal in singles at the 2007 games in Louisville.

In doubles action, the Palmer and Rutherford duo lost its second round match to the eventual bronze medal-winning team, then responded with a win in consolation play before losing a close consolation final 9-8(5) to a team from California.

The Senior Olympics is played every other year during the summer with the host site typically a large urban city. Stanford University in Palo Alto, California served as host for the 2009 games. This year, the games attracted more than 10,000 participants in 18 medal sports and 7 demonstration sports. The games will be hosted in Houston in June 2011.
