Past President’s Scholarship
The Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (KAHPERD) established a scholarship in 2008 to honor and recognize two outstanding future professionals. The Past President’s Scholarship is an endowed fund whereby the interest is awarded annually each year to two deserving students; one in health education and one in physical education, respectively. The endowed fund was established through the financial contributions of a KAHPERD Past President in a challenge to the other Past President’s and KAHPERD membership. Any KAHPERD member may make a contribution to the scholarship which is tax deductible.
The scholarship is a one-time award, and is not renewable.
Eligibility:
The student shall be a junior or senior majoring in health education or physical education in a Kentucky College or University with a GPA 3.0 or higher in the major and overall at the time of award. Professional involvement, leadership potential, work ethic, and potential for future success, will be considered.
Application:
Application available online at KAHPERD website www.kahperd.com and Department Chairs offices at Kentucky Colleges and Universities. All completed applications shall be submitted to the KAHPERD committee chair no later than September 1st. The application must be complete in order to be considered: 1) application form; 2) reflection piece on career goals; 3) professional letters of recommendation; and 4) an official copy of the academic transcript.
Selection:
A KAHPERD standing committee shall make the selection of the scholarship recipients. The committee (five members) shall be chaired by the KAHPERD Past President, President Elect, and three KAHPERD Past President’s appointed by the President. Membership is to be a staggered with 3,2,1 year terms, then thereafter each new President will appoint a member for a three year term.
The scholarship recipients shall be selected and notified by the committee chair no later than September 30th.
Presentation:
The KAHPERD Past President’s Scholarship shall be presented at the annual convention. Information on all recipients shall be printed in the KAHPERD newsletter and placed on the website.

Selection
1. All committee members are expected to complete the evaluation process of each applicant by the deadline set by the committee chair. Evaluations must be received by a majority of the committee to award the scholarships. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
2. Committee members may not write letters of recommendation for scholarship applicants. Committee members must also disclose any professional relationship (advisor, instructor) with applicants prior to the evaluation process.
3. If two or more applicants receive the same score, the committee will rank the applicants (1 as first choice, 2 as second choice) by preference.
4. The committee reserves the right to resolve any unexpected situations relative to the application or evaluation process.
5. The committee chair reserves the right to replace a committee member in the event of a conflict of interest.
