Discovering Philosophical Approaches to Leadership

Discovering Philosophical Approaches to Leadership

Philosophical approach:  Do what is right.       Do your best.     Treat others with respect.

“Train up a child so they may be able to bear the weight of responsibility when they grow up.”

Spheres of influence of a coach:  Academic,    athletic,     social,     spiritual     (exit interviews)

Relational Authority Vs. Positional Authority

Chronological Teaching outline: ages 0-6(focus discipline), ages 7-12(focus teaching them), ages 13-21(focus coaching them), ages 21 (focus befriending them)

Circle of success:   Preparation precedes confidence and success. (D-day, June 6th, 1944)

Multiple failures in practice means you are outworking someone and your learning
curve is being promoted. (ask Edison)

Opportunity always comes disguised as hard work. (Tony Gwinn)

Hard work is something the body must be motivated to do, motivation is how the mind prepares the body, and  motivation is planned preparation, preparation then meets opportunity.
(Rudy, “I have been ready for this my entire life!!”)

Have a plan, have a plan, and have a plan!!!!

Work to solve the problem instead of laying the blame. (ask a politician about this one)

You must have something to “push” against at all times. Coach to potential not to winning. Work to potential

Coach and play against the “game” not the situation.  (levels of play) (Dave Stewart)

“THIS PITCH” mentality must be employed. “THIS PLAY”      In teaching:  “This Day’ or “This Class”

“You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar”

If you are the leader, LEAD!!! Most of the officers on Iwo Jima did not make it home.

“There is a patient and caring attitude that can be combined with a focused effort that promotes an environment for learning.”

Relational discipline works more often than authoritative discipline.

Team sports must buy into the concept of “the whole (winning) being the summation of its parts”

Stones River, Tenn. The Union band was playing camp songs in the evening before a battle. The Confederate soldiers, encamped nearby, started applauding and singing along with their bands and the Union bands. At the end of the evening the Union band packed their instruments only to hear the Confederate soldiers yelling for the band to play some of their Johnny Reb songs. The Union band complied, unpacked their instruments and began playing songs of the South. At the end of their “concert” both armies (81,000 total) sang “Home Sweet Home” together. Within 3 days 23,000 of those voices would sing no more.  Individuality superseded by commitment to a higher calling. The ultimate team player.
